Hyaluronic acid

Our research and innovation on the regenerative power of Hyaluronic Acid. We study the effects of Hyaluronic Acid on the body and try to make it available where it is needed.
What is it?
It is an endogenous molecule, which is found in many organisms and is considered to be highly important for the evolution of species.
Where does it come from?
For many years, this polysaccharide was produced via extraction processes from tissue of animal origin. More recently, thanks to the research carried out in our laboratories, a bacteria from the Streptococcus equi family was “trained” to produce Hyaluronic Acid of the high standard of quality required for medical use, via a fermentation process.

We continue to innovate with this molecule, gradually establishing ourselves in the field of regenerative medicine.

Our Hyaluronic Acid

We are able to produce fractions of Hyaluronic Acid of different molecular weight, each of which has unique physico-chemical characteristics and has a wide range of medical applications, from the healing of skin wounds to the use in intra-articular theraphy.

Modifications to the native polymer

Thanks to its high biocompatibility, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is one of the best natural polymers as a starting material for numerous biomedical applications, from tissue engineering to drug delivery. Over the years, various modifications to the native polymer have been studied, to provide it with greater mechanical and chemical resistance, or to use it as a delivery system for active molecules.

A

Generally, the most common modification is transformation of the viscous HA solution into a gel through cross-linking.

B

A second modification is the binding of molecules (e.g. drugs) to the polymer. In this case, the aim is not to improve the mechanical properties, but to use HA as a drug delivery system.

C

A third modification adopted is creation of biomaterials through the binding of HA to other natural or synthetic polymers to obtain a new material with different mechanical or physiological properties.

Our technologies

The first linear amide derivative of Hyaluronic Acid with a longer residence time and significant rheological properties.

The auto cross-linking of the linear polymer without a chemical spacer between the polymer chains.

The first crosslinking to involve both ether and ester bonds.

The first linear esterification of the native polymer.

Some of our current projects

We study the many applications of Hyaluronic Acid and develop projects in collaboration with international centres of excellence, which enables innovative solutions to be brought to doctors and patients.

An innovative approach to the osteoarthritis therapy, combining the lubrication of the joint with the controlled release of active molecules.

We are developing a new product containing HA and an active ingredient for acute pain management.

A cancer drug bound to Hyaluronic Acid is delivered to where it performs its action, making the substance more compatible with the body and reaching the cancer cells more efficiently

We are working to extend the use of Hyaluronic Acid to new ophthalmic applications.

We are working on new injectables to extend the effect of HA once it is administered into the dermis.
